第16研究 アメリカ文学におけるintersectionality, interdisciplinarity, intertextualityの諸相 研究代表者：白川 恵子（文学部）
本研究は、アメリカ文学および文学研究の多義的特性を反映し、境界越境的・横断的な読みの提示を試みる。研究課題が示す通り、その際の理論的バックボーンとなる概念を、交差性、学際性、関テクスト性と措定している。植民地代から現代までの事象を分析対象として、アメリカ文学／文化／歴史を共時的かつ通時的に扱いながら、これら理論の単体援用を超えて、複合的に混交させつつ特定テクストを論じた場合、いかなる読みが新たに生まれるのかを考察し、共有するのが、本研究の目的である。個々のアイデンティティや社会的立ち位置の重層性、異なる複数学問領域の結節点、多様な媒体／テクスト間に見出せる意外な連関性を、文字通り交差させながら、個々の研究者が任意の対象を分析・解釈し、それをさらに包括していく行為は、従来の権威的主体によって階層化された構造に疑義を唱える異階層性の概念に基づき、テクストを再評価していくことにもなるだろう。

| 研究会内容 |
“Four Times Henry James: What’s New in Henry James Studies” outlined four areas in Henry James studies that both represent a “modern” or twentieth-century Anglo-American understanding of Henry James and also point to new areas of investigation into Henry James and his work. Any of the four might be suitable for scholars of other writers who were James’s contemporaries too. The four areas outlined are:
1) Henry James and modern drama, with attention to the London group that sought to identify the best modern drama in the world and bring it to London for performance, especially the group’s interest in Ibsen’s plays. In addition to James, members of the group who are discussed include Edmund Gosse, William Archer, William Heinemann, Elizabeth Robins, Marion Lea, and Hugh and Florence Bell.
2) Henry James and public identity, using Philip Waller’s survey of practices of literary culture in later nineteenth-century Britain in Writers, Readers, and Reputations: Literary Life in Britain 1870-1918, to help estimate the ways James presented himself as a modern author in order to gain acceptance in liberal London culture in the later 1870s, when he moved there from Paris, and also as a working writer in Britain who sought to maximize his income without compromising his artistic goals.
3) Henry James’s support of and work with female writers and painters, with attention to James’s relationships with Edith Wharton, Constance Fenimore Woolson, Sarah Orne Jewett, Violet Paget, and Ellen Emmet Rand and Henry James.
4) Henry James and money, with attention to James’s financial status during his later years and the value of his estate just after his death in early 1916.
米国クレイトン大学 グレッグ・ザカライアス教授は20世紀転換期のアメリカ文学のキャノンであるヘンリー・ジェイムズ（1843-1916）研究の泰斗でいらっしゃり、グローバルな規模で学界に貢献されてきた。 20年以上にわたりヘンリー・ジェイムズの書簡全集（The Complete Letters of Henry James）のプロジェクト・ディレクター兼編集長として、また学会誌『ヘンリー・ジェイムズ・レビュー』の編集者（2018‐ ）として現在もご活躍である。 講演では、ジェイムズやモダニティに関する深い洞察、そして書簡全集や学会誌の編集に携わっていらっしゃる知見から、最近のジェイムズ研究の動向について四つの観点から論じられた。大変示唆に富み、最近の研究動向を詳細に説明された。 |

本発表において、報告者は、まず標題の報告に至る以前の研究過程が、本研究会が掲げるintertextuality, intersectionality, interdisciplinarity の諸概念とどのように関連しているのかを検討した。
さらに、体制に対する転覆的抵抗精神の発露を、アメリカ独立革命期からアンテベラム期までの複数テクストの中に模索した取り組みについて紹介し、その後、奴隷叛乱事件の考察へと進捗した研究過程を示した。
そして、報告者がここ数年間考察してきた初期アメリカにおける複数の奴隷叛乱（陰謀）事件の中から、特にサウス・カロライナの事例（1822）を取り上げつつ、公式報告文書（裁判記録）およびそれを分析・解釈するこんにちの歴史家による論考と小説等の文学的・文化的表象との間の接点を探った。
また歴史テクストと文学テクストとの相互補完的解釈の可能性につき、“affirmative fiction”なる概念を想定して示した。
さらに当該語はサウス・カロライナの事例を考察した先行研究がその論考内で言うところの”novelistic evidence”という概念に近似しているのではないかと指摘した。
